An endoscopy is a procedure during which a special camera (endoscope) is used to visualize the respective organ. For instance, the endoscopy of the colon (colonoscopy), rectum (proctosigmoidoscopy) and anus (anoscopy). These procedures are performed to screen for diseases, aid with diagnosis or used to treat certain conditions.

The indications for colonoscopy include screening for colorectal cancer, rectal bleeding, altered bowel function, significant family of colorectal cancer and occasionally unexplained abdominal pain.

At The Woodlands Colon and Rectal Associates, our specialists are extensively trained in endoscopy of the lower gastrointestinal tract and perform colonoscopies, proctosigmoidoscopies and anoscopies (including high resolution anoscopy (HRA)). We also use advanced endoscopic techniques to treat complex colonic polyps.

HRA involves the use a microscope to evaluate the anal canal in order to identify and treat anal dysplastic lesions and thus possibly reduce the risk of anal cancer in at risk populations. It is an office procedure and recovery is usually fast.
